Learning with Crosswords

The principle of learning is to give the learner a problem and motivate him enough to make him find the solution. This is what crosswords are all about. You give the user a clue and motivate him to find the solution word. As more fields are filled in, the crossword get easier, teasing the user to continue. In this way the crosswords have a unique ability to motivate the user to continue learning. With crosswords the user can also control that the answers given are correct, because they will always cross other words and they have to have the correct length.

Learning a Foreign Language with Crosswords

We have used our Crossword Generation Technology to create a unique learning method. The method uses current news headlines in the foreign language with one of the words censured away. The point is that the user should figure out this missing word and fill it into the crossword. To help he/she will see a translation of the word in his own language.

To each clue, there is only one word that fits into the crossword. This causes the user to automatically focus on details by searching for the right spelling and conjugation of a word. This focus on detail is very important at a late stage of foreign language learning, and with crosswords this comes naturally, without needing anyone to pick on every little mistake the learner makes.

Other benefits of the Translation Crosswords learning method:

  • The user learns the language in a real-life situation – trying to understand a News Headline
  • The user gets a soft introduction to newspapers in a foreign language
The user is updated on current topics relevant to the region speaking the language
